Eclipse: Coincidence, or Intricately Designed?

Psalm 19:1

You know that today is kind of a big day. It has been much anticipated for months now. Watching parties planned. Special glasses purchased. Hotels sold out. Homes rented out. Highways will be parking lots. On and on.

But why?

The Bible tells us that even if we did not know the story of Jesus, did not have a Bible, did not know other Christians, and had zero biblical or theological knowledge — we would still have every reason to believe that God exists.

For what can be known about God is plain to us, because God has shown it to us. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So we are without excuse. [Romans 1:20]

Consider this: The very fact that humans can see outside of Earth is miraculous. We have a window to the stars and planets and galaxies. We can see them with our own eyes.

As noted by Stephen E. Danish,

“The sun is 390 times larger than the moon. It is also 390 times farther away. Every eighteen months or so they align perfectly so that the moon's shadow passes over the earth, and those in the path of that shadow see a solar eclipse. This is often described as one of the great coincidences of our solar system.

Astronomers also tell us that there are 295 moons in our solar system. And yet ours is the only moon with the exact size and distance to perfectly match the sun and produce this amazing spectacle. If our moon was any smaller the sky would not turn dark, and if it was any larger, we would never see that brilliant corona.”

*The one place where these amazing eclipses occur is the one place where there are observers to see them!*

The total solar eclipse on February 16, 1980 – “a night darker than the darkest nights” – was seen all over India. The event caused astronomers and scientists from around the world to travel to see it. Amazingly, this experience forced many of them to reconsider their atheist/agnostic beliefs. Several have testimonies now acknowledging a Creator, and admitting that our universe, and our lives, cannot be random. (The Privileged Planet)

Deep down we know there is something – Someone – greater. It's a knowledge hidden deep in our souls. So while we enjoy the festivities today, as our pastor said... “Don't just look at the sun, look to the Son!”

“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands!” [Psalm 19:1]
