1 Peter 4:12–18

Scripture:
1 Peter 4:12-19

Background: Most likely written under the power of Emperor Nero around 64-67 AD. Peter is at the height of his influence in the church and he uses that influence to “shepherd the flock” that has been entrusted to him by Jesus. Peter wrote this book with the intention of encouraging believers in Jesus to persevere through the current circumstance. He also desired that the leaders would lead them well as though they are doing it for Jesus, the Chief Shepherd.

Lesson: As Peter nears the end of his letter, he again charges the readers to faithfully endure the trials that will come their way just because of the name of Jesus. With a firm yet encouraging command, Christians are charged to “rejoice and be glad” when they share in Christ’s sufferings so that Christians are allowed to rejoice when Jesus comes. The same charge is repeated in the following verses with a brief allusion to 1 Peter 2:18-25 and concludes with even more encouragement as Peter mentions the last days.

Main Point/Takeaway: Christians are to be focused on the glory of Jesus instead of the trials of this life.

Questions: (These questions are suggestions designed to spur discussion. Feel free to ask others.)

1: Why would Peter begin this section with “Beloved” (ESV)?

2: What two commands does Peter give in verses 12-13?

2a: How do they relate to each other?

3: Compare the possibility of verse 14 (If…) with the certainty of verse 12.

            3a: Is there a difference?

3b: What do you think is the reason for the difference?

4: Why do you think Peter alludes to 1 Peter 2:18-25?

5: Read verses 17-18. Do these verses encourage or scare you?

Conclusion: Peter encourages his audience to faithfully endure for the sake of Jesus, even in the midst of certain trials and persecution. Like Peter’s audience, we are to endure because of the relationship we have with Jesus.
